LIGHTPOINT® Online Training
Science of Light and Lighting

Here we offer some basic training modules.

Lighting Language
Satisfy your burning desire to understand terms like light output, candlepower, light level, and brightness. Select this illuminating module to learn and understand 8 fundamental terms that are used in the lighting industry and how they apply to lamps, luminaires, and a space. Other terms include efficacy, efficiency, lamp life, and lumen maintenance.

Length: 17:23

Electrical Language
The language of lighting is complemented with this module, which addresses a number of electrical terms used throughout the lighting industry. You will learn about voltage, current, power, and energy as they are related to lamps and ballasts along with EMI, RFI, power factor, ballast factor, and THD.

Length: 21:39

Color Basics
Color Basics covers how we see color and how this applies to light sources.  Topics include the electromagnetic, visible spectrum, additive and subtractive color mixing, and color perception; including spectral power distribution, correlated color temperature (CCT), and color rendering index (CRI). It also contains some examples of different CCTs and CRIs and how they make objects appear.

Length: 30:47

Introduction to the Lighting Design Process
Introduction to the Lighting Design Process covers the different phases of architectural design including getting the job, developing the program, presentations for approval, construction and post-occupancy evaluation. Learn about various lighting design techniques, how to identify user needs, and tools with which to design a space.

Length: 28:09

LED Basics - Arrays, Modules & Light Engines
What's the difference between an LED array, module and light engine? Listen and learn about the characteristics of each along with the solutions LEDVANCE can provide.

Length: 15:00

LED Basics - LED's and Color
LEDs and Color covers how LEDs generate white light through color mixing and phosphor conversion. Learn about color consistency, binning and MacAdam ellipses in relation to correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI) and efficacy.

Length: 25:00

LED Basics - LED Chips and Packages
LEDs have arrived and are changing the world of general lighting.  Learn what an LED is and how it works.  Included is a history of LEDs, the characteristics of LED chips (chip growth, monochromatic and white light) and the packages (radial, SMT, chip-on-board) along with the challenges and advantages of LEDs

Length: 37:00

LED Basics:  LED Standards, Reporting & Guidelines
LED Guidelines, Reporting and Standards covers two testing standards used for LED, LM-79 and LM-80, including sample reports of each.  See how these standards apply to LED packages, arrays, modules, luminaires and integrated lamps.  Also learn about CALiPER, Energy Star, Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance Luminaires, and Next Generation Luminaires, and the IES Progress Reports.

Length: 32:00

Light Source Basics
Light Source Basics address 10 common characteristics of general illumination light sources such as incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, HID, and LED.  The characteristics include cost, physical shape, light output, candlepower, efficacy, life, lumen maintenance, spectral power distribution, CCT and CRI.

Length: 11:00

Lighting Control - Occupancy Sensor Basics
Using high efficiency ballasts and reduced wattage lamps can save energy, shutting off the lighting when the area is unoccupied can save much more. Attend Occupancy Sensor Basics and learn about the different occupancy sensor technologies such as passive infrared, ultrasonic, acoustic and microwave.  Also learn how they work and where they are used.

Length: 19:00

Lighting Control - Photosensor Basics
Saving energy is possible when the electric light is reduced when enters a space.  To accomplish this, a photosensor is used, but understanding photosensors can be confusing.  Attend and learn what a photosensor is, how it works and the key terms (open-loop, closed-loop, switching, dimming, constant set-point response, proportional response) you need to know before specifying this energy saving technology.

Length: 11:00

Luminaire Basics
Luminaires can be classified in many ways.  This online training module will focus on what a luminaire is, types of luminaires and luminaire components.

Length: 5:00

Vision Basics
Iision Basics covers the process of vision and how we see.  Topics include the electromagnetic spectrum, light sources, reflection, refraction, absorption, and transmission.  It also covers a basic overview of how the eye works and how age, accommodation, adaptation, size, speed, luminance, contrast, and glare affect our ability to see..
